“Don’t expect Jojo the Jungle Boy,” so explains “Froggy” as he sets in motion a series of uproarious events that puts his shy, humdrum friend in the middle of unusual circumstances in Larry Shue’s The Foreigner, playing in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium at Southern State Community College, Hillsboro, Ohio, March 5 and 6 at7:30 p.m. and on March 7 at 3:30 p.m.
The scene is a fishing lodge in rural Georgia often visited by “Froggy” LeSueur (played by Jonathan Stewart, Sr.), a British demolition expert who occasionally runs training sessions at a nearby army base. This time “Froggy” has brought along a friend, a pathologically shy young man named Charlie (Benjamin Gullett) who is overcome with fear at the thought of making conversation with strangers. So "Froggy," before departing, tells all assembled that Charlie is from an exotic foreign country and speaks no English. Once alone, the fun really begins, as Charlie overhears more than he should: the evil plans of a man who is hiding in plain sight and his redneck associate, a secret pregnancy, and many other damaging revelations made with the thought that Charlie doesn’t understand a word being said. That he does, fuels the nonstop hilarity of the play.
