newslonestar2010This summer, SSCC Theatre is excited to be presenting two of James McLure’s hilarious one-act plays, Lone Star and Laundry and Bourbon, in an evening simply titled, Lone Star and Laundry.

Lone Star takes place in the cluttered backyard of a small-town Texas bar. Roy (Donald Gehres), a brawny, macho type who had once been a local high-school hero, is back in town after a hitch in Vietnam and trying to reestablish his position in the community. Joined by his younger brother, Ray (Daniel Bragdon), Roy sets about consuming a case of beer while regaling Ray with tales of his military and amorous exploits. Lone Star also features Bryce Penwell as Cletis.

The setting of Laundry and Bourbon is the front porch of Roy and Elizabeth’s home in Maynard, Texas, on a hot summer afternoon. Elizabeth (Ayla Stirnaman) and her friend Hattie (Katie Cavendish) are whiling away the time folding laundry, watching TV, sipping bourbon and Coke, and gossiping about the many open secrets which are so much a part of small-town life. They are joined by the self-righteous Amy Lee (Courtney Beekman) who, among other tidbits, can’t resist blurting out that Roy has been seen around town with another woman.

Lone Star and Laundry is directed by Rainee Angles and stage managed by Sarah Williams, with other crew positions fulfilled by: Brent Angles, Amanda Castro, Elise Garrett, Benjamin Gullett, Amy Petzold, Sunni Robinett, Ariel Thornton, Angela Watkins, Shawn Weyer and A.J. Yourkvitch. Lone Star and Laundry will be performed in the Edward K. Daniels Auditorium at the Central Campus of Southern State Community College on August 22 and 23 at 7:30 p.m. and again on August 24 at 3:30 p.m. General admission is $5. Tickets can be reserved by calling (937) 393-3431 ext. 2794 or by purchasing them at the front door prior to the performances. More information can be found here.
